Tambra Place Fall Newsletter

It’s back to school time for both college and area high schools. TambraPlace is currently serving three residents who are attending college, one who is attending high school, and two who are attending vocational training.

Thank you to our donors who continue to support our residents and outreach. Thank you again to all who donated graduation gifts for several of our residents back at the beginning of the summer. It meant so much.

What is TambraPlace?

Objectives:

The TambraPlace Young Women's and Young Men’s Transitional Homes of Moore County, NC, is a residential program that supports and meets the needs of Young Women and Young Men, ages 18-24. We provide a safe, nurturing and empowering environment to serve youth who are:

·       At-Risk For Failing Without Intervention

·       Facing Homelessness

·       Transitioning From Child Welfare Services

·       Potential Abuse Victims

Goals:

The goal of the TambraPlace program is to help prevent a lifetime of dependence on the state with a cost-effective, short-term investment in independent living which challenges participants to grow emotionally, spiritually, socially and financially in ways they often have not considered. Our overarching service strategy is to provide educational support and therapeutic services in a home setting while providing an environment that fosters social skills and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in order to be successful.

TambraPlace serves young women and young men with currently two homes and a third on the way, working to cure the recidivism of homelessness by helping youth who have aged out of foster care.

News

  • TambraPlace’s two homes are serving seven residents currently: 4 young women and 3 young men.

  • Another home is coming! TambraPlace is currently working on grants and initiatives to break ground on a third home. Stay tuned for more news and updates!

  • TambraPlace’s community outreach continues to serve dozens of young people in our service area.

  • We have recently hired Meredith Haynes as our new Financial Assistant. Thank you, Meredith, for taking on the accounting work!

Did you know? TambraPlace’s residents and staff receive ongoing continuing education and training in the areas of values, goals, financial planning, and basic skills.

Needs

TambraPlace is seeking new Board Members, especially individuals willing to serve on our building and fundraising committees, as we grow our services and outreach and break ground for a third TambraPlace home.

A TambraPlace Testimonial

"I had known Mrs. Chamberlain since I was in high school. In school I was pretty much an introvert. I didn’t talk to anyone, and I would go and sit in her office almost every day during lunch and tell her how I was doing. She helped me a lot, especially since she knew my family situation. I remember in high school she had told me she had a dream to help all those young people who had nowhere to go, nowhere safe, the ones that needed that safe haven, including me.

After graduating, I was trying to go to college. I was homeless, living out of my car, and I was trying to get some help with financial aid. I was working really hard, low-paying jobs in harsh conditions. Once I was working in a field with no type of bathroom. We could get off and go into the bushes to find a place to use it. I worked for a while making pine straw bundles, getting paid less than a dollar for each bundle if the bundle was made well. I remember one day I didn’t get paid at all and only had a Lunchable to eat that day. Once I had to help clean the inside of a storage unit where they kept corn, and it was very hard to breathe that day.

I needed help. I needed to get back to school and change my life. I sent Mrs. Chamberlain a text, and that’s when she called me to let me know that TambraPlace was finally going to open. That’s when I became the first resident in Kelly House. Without me having the place to live and TambraPlace’s support, I wouldn’t have been able to get where I am today. I am one semester away from graduating college, and once I do, I know I have a promising job with security ahead for me. Once I graduate, I will support TambraPlace and give back to my community."
